“The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” -Eleanor Roosevelt

When my Dad passed away, exactly 1 month ago today, I asked that patients share with me their stories about "Dr. Ed."  On this Mother's Day, with her permission, I wanted to share one such story that Lauren Ryan (Supported Birth Class) sent to me and have uploaded it here.  I plan on sharing the note with my Mom today.  I know it will touch her heart as it touched mine!  It made me think of that quote from Eleanor Roosevelt, “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams!”

So in essence, my Dad had a greater impact on more than his 3 children & 8 grandchildren.  His legacy will remain for generations to come!  Happy Mother's Day to all, but especially to those who have fond memories of their delivery, made that much more special by the pioneering spirit of Edward Taras, M.D.!!!

Dr. Edward Taras of Woodland Hills, CA passed away peacefully at home with all his family at his bedside at the age of 80 on Friday, April 13, 2014.

Born 12/29/33 in Montreal, Canada, Ed moved to Woodland Hills in 1967 where he started a successful ObGyn practice.   In the next 35 years, Ed delivered thousands of babies.  A pioneer of natural childbirth, Ed was one of the first doctors to allow expectant fathers into the delivery room.

In his free time, Ed enjoyed good food, dancing and travel. His adventures took him to six continents where he formed lasting friendships and cherished memories. Above all else, Ed enjoyed being with his family and friends on whom he made a deep and meaningful impact. Ed is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, his sister, three children and their spouses and eight grandchildren. He was truly one-of-a-kind!

The funeral will be at Eden Memorial Park, Mission Hill, CA,  on Sunday, 4/13/14 @ 10:00 AM.  In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to www.tinyurl.com/EdTaras in Ed’s name.

Revlon Run Walk to Walk With Love

Please DONATE to our WWL Breast Cancer Philanthropy: http://tinyurl.com/WWL-Ian
"Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail." --Ralph Waldo Emerson

We have some exciting philanthropy news to share and hope y'all will partner up with us to make this the biggest participation and fundraising year yet!  We've decided to team up with "Walk with Love" (WWL) on SUNDAY May 18, 2014 at the Pacific Palisades Rec Ctr. @ 8:30 AM.  This event is 8 days after the Revlon Run Walk (RRW) event that we traditionally had participated in.  An event where last year our 'Lil 'ol team raised over $81,000 and had over 200 people and were the NUMBER ONE team fundraiser besting the likes of Disney, UCLA, Toyota, Macy's & KABC-7!!!  In the last decade Team Taras has raised over 1/2 MILLION dollars!

WHY: Every day 108 women die of breast cancer.  My grandma died of ovarian cancer, my Mom got breast cancer @ 47 and is still cancer free and my sister has the gene and had the 'Angelina Jolie' prophylactic mastectomy.  We started walking before we knew we had the gene but now I too have tested BRCA gene positive!  Now I walk selfishly for my daughter!  We need to shift breast cancer research into high gear and focus on finding the cause(s) and ways to prevent it. You have the power to fuel breakthrough research and have an immediate impact on ending breast cancer by raising much needed funds for the Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation.

3 ways to be involved (even if you can't be here):
  1. Join our Team (Run or Walk the 5K)
    • $35 registration fee: http://tinyurl.com/WWL-DrT
    • Join Now - Think about whether you can come later!
    • When you sign up we will send you more details and updates.
  2. Donate
    • Click: http://tinyurl.com/WWL-Ian
    • I'm honored last few years to have been the #1 individual fundraiser @ the RRW but even more pride comes from our grass roots effort of obtaining more individual donations than anyone else!  $5, $50, $500, $5,000 ... they're all good!  O:-)
  3. Virtual Participant (Run, Walk, Swim, Bike or just hang out on your couch in your own neighborhood)
    • $20 registration fee: http://tinyurl.com/WWL-DrT
    • Comes with a complimentary WWL 2014 t-shirt

While we are focusing on a new charity (for reasons that include smaller, Sunday & site change), we still want you to form your own teams and donate to Revlon.  Because its time to move on, we're 'retiring' at the top and hoping that someone else will form a RRW team that will one day take them to number one the way we started out over a dozen years ago with a team of a dozen!  After all, in the end, all the funds go to the same 'pot.'  Once again, we will NOT be participating this year in Revlon but invite you to do so.

We hope you will join us as we move forward towards a future without breast cancer!

DONATE WITH CONFIDENCE
The Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation is committed to investing donations to research and programs, such as the Army of Women initiative and the Health of Women Study.  85¢ of every dollar your donate goes to research!  They have the seal of approval from the BBB Wise Giving Alliance, Charity Navigator and Guidestar.

Sincerely,
Ian Taras, MD, Ob/Gyn

Walking seven hours a week may lower breast cancer risk

http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-204_162-57606064/walking-seven-hours-a-week-may-lower-breast-cancer-risk/
"Women who stay active after menopause might reduce their risk of breast cancer.

New research shows that women who engaged in at least one hour of vigorous physical activity each day significantly lowered their risk for breast cancer compared to those who didn't exercise. But, even walking at least seven hours per week lowered the risk considerably.

The researchers made their determinations based on data on 73,615 postmenopausal women between 50 and 74 years old. The women were all part of the Cancer Prevention Study - II Nutrition Cohort, and enrolled in the study between 1992 and 1993. They were asked to complete a questionnaires about their health and lifestyles at the beginning of the study, and then every two years between 1997 and 2009.

About 9 percent of the women did not exercise, and about 47 percent said that walking was their only physical activity.

The most active women, who had 42 MET hours per week or more (at least one hour of vigorous (3 miles/hr pace) exercise a day), reduced their risk of breast cancer by 25 percent compared to women who were the least active. These women averaged less than 7 MET hours a week, or about two hours of moderately-paced walking.

Looking closely at women who walked as their only form of exercise, researchers saw women who walked seven hours or more per week had a 14 percent lower risk for breast cancer compared to those who walked three hours or less."  Those who walked even more vigorously than 3 mi/hr pace saw their risk drop by 25%!

25% pay CUT... invitation to be an ObamaCare provider:

This is an actual excerpt from a December, 2012 letter I received from Blue Shield (I received a similar one from Anthem-Blue Cross) inviting me to become a provider for the new ACA (Affordable Care Act), otherwise known as ObamaCare.  In the rest of the letter they first applauded my past care, threatened that come January, 2014, many of my current PPO patients would convert to the more affordable plans so if I did not accept their (hostage) terms that I would loose a considerable part of my practice.  What were those terms?  That I should accept (graciously and appreciatively) an average (its right there in black and white) a 25% pay CUT!  Ah, now I understand how they're going to balance this budget!  My response was a polite NO THANK YOU!
